This month’s featured exhibit as part of GCDC’s Local Artist Series is Kip Patrick.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
DC resident Kip Patrick is a longtime travel writer and award-winning photographer whose work has been published by National Geographic, CNN, and Men’s Journal. When not working next door to GCDC at the United Nations Foundation, Kip can usually be found traveling and taking pictures far from home with his wife Liz and one-year-old son Wyatt. Prior to his most recent return to DC (and becoming a dad), Kip and Liz spent 16 months volunteering across Asia, Africa, and Central America, for which they were named National Geographic Travelers of the Year.
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
This exhibit includes a tiny selection of the more than 50,000 photos they shot during their around-the-world trip, as well as a few recently-shot images from around Washington.
CAMEL TRADER AT DAWN
A camel trader warms as the sun rises over India’s Pushkar Camel Fair, an annual festival that has become the world’s largest showplace to buy, sell, or trade camels. Herdsmen travel from miles around to attend the event, some driving their animals days at a time, resulting in a landscape packed with up to 50,000 noisy, smelly, and seriously flatulent camels.
In addition to the business end of the fair, the event also features camel races, parades, a longest-mustache competition and, best of all, a most-beautiful camel contest. If this one’s not on your bucket list, add it…right after you finish your grilled cheese.
Visit 1of7.zenfolio.com to see additional photos or come Meet the Artist at his opening reception on Tuesday, February 21 from 5-7 pm at GCDC Grilled Cheese Bar (1730 Pennsylvania Ave NW).

Steven Ray Miller specializes in gouache (opaque water color) and acrylic paintings on multiple layers of glass.
His paintings resemble actual photographs: clarified realism with enhanced contrasts that make the scenes very bold. Miller has exhibited throughout the U.S. and was named Best Artist for three years in a row by readers of Durham Magazine.
Steven uses hearts in much of his work – symbols of connection to bring the viewer in for a closer look.
This exhibits spans more than 30 years of work. Snowscape depicts Capitol Hill during the snowstorm of 1979. The painting of GCDC was completed recently – it shows the restaurant in the Spring of 2016.
A graduate of Duke University, Miller resides in Durham, NC.
